From our BOARD & STAFF
The Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) Board of Trustees and Staff are pleased to share WHF’s 2024 Annual Report to the Community. In these pages, we celebrate the collective progress made by nonprofit and public sector partners to improve health and well-being across Greater Williamsburg. These organizations consistently respond to our region’s evolving needs with compassion and dedication. Because of their efforts, our neighbors of all ages are better supported, more connected, and have greater access to the resources, care, and services they need to thrive.
WHF views health as more than physical well-being. Health is shaped by opportunities to make healthy choices throughout life and includes access to quality healthcare, mental health resources, nutritious food, opportunities for physical activity, and social networks that help us maintain connection.
Guided by our mission to collaborate, innovate, and invest to impact systems that improve health and well-being, WHF’s grantmaking is focused on strengthening the healthcare safety-net for individuals who are uninsured and underinsured and addressing the behavioral and social risk factors that influence health across the life span. As we reflect on 2024 and look toward the future, we are optimistic. Through times of uncertainty, our partnerships remain steadfast. In this reflective report, we honor this network defined by resilience, determination, and a commitment to continued advancements in enhancing health in Greater Williamsburg!
“As we close out 2025, we do so with deep gratitude for the organizations and individuals who partner with us to make Greater Williamsburg healthier. Through listening and learning, we continue to be inspired by their insight and dedication. With refinements to WHF’s programmatic strategy on the horizon in 2026, our focus remains steadfast: to support lasting health and well-being for all in our community.”
“As neighbors who live, work, study, worship, and play in Greater Williamsburg, WHF’s Board members are inspired by the efforts unfolding all around us. We’re consistently amazed at the dedication of local nonprofits working to improve health in our community. As we look to the future, we remain committed to supporting efforts that make Greater Williamsburg an even healthier place to live.”

WHF Financial Summary
WHF was established in 1996 when the Williamsburg Community Hospital and Sentara formed a partnership agreement and later merged. This agreement included a provision for a new, locally organized and managed Foundation to benefit community health. In the inaugural year, WHF started with an endowment of $55 million and anticipated providing $1 million annually to support health initiatives in the community. To fulfill the objective of providing financial support for community partner programs and health initiatives in perpetuity, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees established a goal to achieve investment returns sufficient to support ongoing operations and grant distributions and maintain pace with inflation. Under the careful oversight of the Board of Trustees, the Foundation’s endowment had grown to a value of over $154 million by the end of 2024, and WHF has awarded more than $112 million in grants to benefit health and well-being in Greater Williamsburg.
